Music
At St Mary's, we believe that every child should have the opportunity to experience the joy, creativity and sense of belonging that music can bring. Music is a valued part of both our curriculum and wider school life, with all pupils encouraged to listen, perform, compose and appreciate a wide range of musical genres, traditions and cultures as they progress through the school. Our carefully sequenced curriculum develops pupils' musical understanding from singing, rhythm, pulse and performance in the early years of primary education to increasingly sophisticated skills in composition, notation, improvisation, ensemble playing and musical appreciation by Year 6. Pupils regularly perform for their peers, families and the wider community, developing confidence and a love of sharing music with others.
A particular highlight is our whole-class trombone programme in Year 4, which provides every child with the opportunity to learn and perform on a brass instrument. Beyond the classroom, pupils can access a wide range of musical opportunities, including singing groups, instrumental ensembles and performances both within school and at wider community events.
We work closely with Surrey Arts Music Hub to enrich and strengthen music provision across the school and are committed to supporting any child who wishes to develop their musical talents further, ensuring that music remains an inclusive and inspiring part of every pupil's educational journey. The curriculum progressively develops listening, performance, composition, notation, improvisation and musical appreciation skills from Year 1 to Year 6.
