Hemisphere - Racial Literacy

Racial literacy, through the Hemisphere Education programme, is the ability to recognise, understand and challenge bias, while developing the knowledge and confidence to build respectful, inclusive relationships across different backgrounds. Hemisphere provides a whole-school, evidence-informed approach that helps schools disrupt bias, improve understanding of race and ethnicity, and create a strong sense of belonging for every pupil. At St Mary’s Primary School, we embed this work across our community by equipping staff and pupils with the language, knowledge and strategies to talk openly and respectfully about race, identity and fairness.

Through structured learning, reflection and shared experiences, we ensure that all children feel seen, valued and understood. In doing so, we live out our school values: empowering children to be Confidently me by embracing and celebrating their identity; nurturing Belonging together by creating a safe and inclusive environment where every voice matters; and encouraging pupils to be Challenged to contribute by standing up to injustice, celebrating diversity and playing an active role in building a fairer community.
