Phonics - Our approach to early reading
Our phonics provision is underpinned by the Read Write Inc. (RWI) scheme, which provides a structured, systematic approach to teaching early reading and writing. In the Infant classes, RWI is used as the core programme to develop children’s phonetic awareness, enabling them to decode words with increasing fluency and accuracy, while fostering comprehension and a genuine enjoyment of reading. Through daily, targeted sessions, pupils are carefully assessed and grouped so that teaching is closely matched to their stage of development, supporting them to feel Confidently Me in their reading journey and secure in their growing skills. The consistent routines and collaborative nature of lessons promote Belonging Together, as children learn alongside their peers in a supportive and inclusive environment.
As pupils progress, the principles and strategies established through RWI are reinforced and extended into the Junior classes, where children build on their secure decoding skills to develop greater fluency, deeper comprehension, and the resilience to tackle increasingly complex texts. In doing so, they are Challenged to Contribute as thoughtful, independent readers who can engage critically with a wide range of literature, ensuring strong continuity and progression across the school.
