Year 4

Our Year 4 curriculum continues to build progressively on the strong foundations established in Lower Key Stage 2, ensuring clear continuity from Year 3 while further embedding our core values of Confidently Me, Belonging Together and Challenged to Contribute. Pupils are supported to become increasingly independent, reflective and resilient learners, taking greater ownership of their learning across a broad and ambitious curriculum. Carefully sequenced learning ensures that knowledge and skills are revisited and extended, enabling pupils to deepen their understanding and apply their learning with increasing confidence across all subjects.

The curriculum offers a rich and engaging balance of academic and creative experiences. In English, pupils explore a wide range of high-quality texts and develop their writing through structured approaches such as sentence stacking and extended narrative and non-fiction writing. Mathematics builds on prior learning through a focus on number, calculation, fractions and geometry, while science topics such as sound, electricity and states of matter develop pupils’ enquiry skills and conceptual understanding. A wide-ranging foundation curriculum, including history topics such as the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings, geography studies of rivers and Europe, and creative opportunities in art, design and music, ensures that pupils continue to build cultural capital and a strong understanding of the world around them.

A key focus in Year 4 is preparing pupils for the increasing expectations of Upper Key Stage 2, both academically and personally. Through high-quality teaching, ongoing assessment and responsive support, staff ensure that all learners are appropriately challenged and supported to achieve well. Opportunities for collaboration, discussion and performance, alongside a growing emphasis on independence, enable pupils to contribute meaningfully to their learning and school community. As a result, children leave Year 4 as confident, capable learners who are well-prepared for the next stage of their education.
