Remote Learning

Our Approach

At St Mary’s, we believe in nurturing every child to be a confident individual, part of a strong community, and inspired to make a difference. Attending school in person is central to this. Remote education is therefore only used as a short-term solution when attendance is not possible.

When Remote Education May Be Provided

Remote learning may be used in limited circumstances, including:

  • School closure or restricted attendance (for example in emergencies)
  • Short-term pupil absence, when a child is well enough to learn
  • Exceptional individual circumstances, including some SEND or mental health needs, where this supports a planned return to school

Remote education will always be time-limited and focused on supporting pupils back into school as soon as possible.

What You Can Expect

Confidently Me...

We aim to ensure pupils continue to grow in confidence as learners by:

  • Providing clear, structured learning activities linked to the curriculum
  • Supporting independence through a balance of teaching input and independent work
  • Offering feedback and encouragement to help pupils feel successful

Belonging Together...

We prioritise connection so that every child continues to feel part of our school family:

  • Opportunities for interaction with teachers and peers
  • Regular communication to maintain a sense of belonging
  • Learning that reflects our shared school values and community

Challenged to Contribute...

We encourage pupils to remain motivated and engaged in their learning:

  • High-quality, meaningful tasks across a range of subjects
  • Learning that enables pupils to think, reflect and contribute
  • Appropriate expectations for time spent learning, suited to age and need

We may use a combination of school-led materials, online platforms, and high-quality external resources (such as Oak National Academy).

Supporting All Pupils

We are committed to ensuring every child can access learning:

  • Adapting provision for pupils with SEND or additional needs
  • Working closely with families to provide appropriate support
  • Offering printed resources or alternative approaches where needed

Safeguarding and Online Safety

Keeping children safe is central to all we do. We:

  • Monitor engagement and wellbeing
  • Use secure platforms for learning
  • Provide guidance to families on safe online learning

Working in Partnership with Families

Our shared values are strongest when we work together. We will:

  • Communicate clearly with parents and carers
  • Review remote learning arrangements regularly
  • Support every child’s return to school at the earliest opportunity
