Year 5

Our Year 5 curriculum continues to build securely on the strong foundations developed in Lower Key Stage 2, ensuring clear progression from Year 4 while further embedding our core values of Confidently Me, Belonging Together and Challenged to Contribute. Pupils are encouraged to take increasing ownership of their learning, demonstrating growing independence, resilience and confidence as they move towards the final stage of primary education. The curriculum remains broad, balanced and ambitious, with carefully sequenced learning that enables pupils to deepen and apply their knowledge across a wide range of subjects.

Learning in Year 5 is designed to extend pupils’ thinking and develop greater depth of understanding. In English, pupils engage with a rich range of high-quality texts and writing opportunities, including narrative, non-fiction and poetry, while mathematics builds on prior knowledge through more advanced concepts such as fractions, decimals, percentages and volume. The science curriculum introduces increasingly complex ideas such as earth and space, forces and materials, often enhanced through practical “wow” experiences that bring learning to life. A rich wider curriculum, including studies of Ancient Egypt, British history and global geography such as South America, alongside creative opportunities in art, music and design technology, ensures that pupils continue to broaden their cultural capital and curiosity about the world.

A key focus in Year 5 is preparing pupils for the expectations and responsibilities of Year 6 and beyond. Through high-quality teaching, ongoing assessment and responsive adaptation, staff ensure that all learners are supported and challenged to achieve their best. Opportunities for leadership, collaboration and reflection enable pupils to contribute meaningfully to their school community, strengthening their sense of belonging and responsibility. As a result, children leave Year 5 as confident, articulate and capable learners, well prepared for the final stage of Key Stage 2.
