Year 6
Our Year 6 curriculum represents the culmination of pupils’ journey through St Mary’s, building on the strong foundations established throughout Key Stage 2 and continuing to reflect our core values of Confidently Me, Belonging Together and Challenged to Contribute. Pupils are supported to become highly independent, reflective and confident learners, ready to take on the responsibilities of their next stage of education. The curriculum remains broad, balanced and ambitious, with carefully sequenced learning across English, mathematics, science and the wider curriculum, including topics such as Ancient Greece, World War II and global geography, ensuring that knowledge continues to deepen and connect meaningfully.
While there is a clear focus on preparing pupils for external assessments, we are fully committed to maintaining a rich and engaging curriculum throughout the entire year. High-quality texts, diverse writing opportunities, practical scientific enquiry and creative subjects such as art, music and design technology ensure that learning remains inspiring and well-rounded. This approach supports both academic success and the development of the whole child, allowing pupils to continue exploring their interests, developing their talents and contributing positively to school life.
A key priority in Year 6 is preparing pupils for their onward journey to a range of secondary settings. We place significant emphasis on ensuring that this transition is smooth, well-supported and tailored to individual needs. Through strong relationships, pastoral support and close collaboration with families and receiving schools, staff ensure that every child feels confident and prepared for the next step. As a result, pupils leave St Mary’s as resilient, capable and aspirational learners, with the knowledge, skills and confidence to thrive in the next stage of their education and beyond.
