The history curriculum provides a coherent and progressive journey through British and world history, enabling pupils to develop their understanding of chronology, historical enquiry, significance, cause and consequence, and the impact of past events on modern society. Pupils begin by exploring their own personal history and changes within living memory before studying key events and individuals such as the Great Fire of London, early aviation pioneers and the British monarchy. As they progress through Key Stage 2, children develop a deeper understanding of prehistoric Britain through the Stone Age, before examining Roman invasion and settlement, the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings, building an increasingly secure understanding of continuity and change over time. In upper Key Stage 2, pupils broaden their historical perspective through studies of major periods and civilisations including British history, the Industrial Revolution, Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, the Early Islamic Civilisation and World War II. Learning is enriched through visits, workshops, debates, role play, artefact handling, museum experiences and historical reenactments, helping pupils to think critically about evidence, compare different societies and understand how historical events have shaped the world in which they live tody.
