At St Mary's Primary school, we are committed to developing confident, resilient and successful mathematicians through a mastery approach to teaching and learning. Our mathematics curriculum is carefully structured to ensure that children build secure foundations, develop deep understanding and are able to apply their knowledge through reasoning and problem solving.

Early Years and Key Stage 1 (Reception to Year 2)

For our youngest learners, we have moved towards the delivery and progression of mathematics as mapped out by White Rose Education. The White Rose schemes are designed around a small-steps approach, enabling children to build mathematical understanding gradually and securely. The programme places number at the heart of learning, ensuring that children develop strong number sense before moving on to more complex concepts.

Through White Rose, children are encouraged to explore mathematics using the Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract (CPA) approach. This means they first use practical resources and manipulatives, then visual representations, before progressing to abstract mathematical methods and symbols. Research-informed teaching strategies support children in developing fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills whilst ensuring that concepts are understood in depth rather than being rushed through.

The White Rose curriculum is carefully sequenced so that learning builds progressively from Reception through to Year 2. Lessons are broken down into manageable small steps, allowing all children to experience success and develop confidence in mathematics. Opportunities to revisit and consolidate previous learning are embedded throughout the curriculum, helping children retain key knowledge and skills over time.

Key Stage 2 (Years 3 to 6)

From Year 3 onwards, we are currently using Power Maths as our main mathematics programme while we continue to evaluate its impact on pupil outcomes and engagement. This evaluation will help inform decisions about the direction of our mathematics provision for the next academic year.

Power Maths is a whole-class mastery programme developed in partnership with White Rose Maths and Pearson. It is designed to spark curiosity, build confidence and develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts. The programme is fully aligned with White Rose progressions and schemes of learning, providing continuity in children's mathematical journey as they move through the school.

Lessons in Power Maths follow a structured mastery approach, encouraging children to think deeply about mathematics, explain their reasoning and make connections between concepts. The programme uses carefully designed textbooks, practice books, interactive teaching resources and assessment materials to support learning. It also continues to utilise the CPA approach, helping children move confidently from practical experiences to abstract mathematical thinking.

A key strength of Power Maths is its belief that all children can succeed in mathematics. Through high-quality questioning, collaborative discussion and carefully sequenced learning, children are supported to master concepts while also being challenged to deepen their understanding. The programme promotes a positive growth mindset, helping pupils develop resilience when tackling new or complex mathematical ideas.

As we continue to review the effectiveness of Power Maths across Years 3 to 6, our focus remains on ensuring that every child receives the highest quality mathematics education, enabling them to become confident, capable and enthusiastic mathematicians.
